Emily Rieman studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and the University of WA in Seattle where she earned her BFA. She has been running the Seattle-based pet photography business Best Friend Photography since 1997. She has been published both commercially and editorially. Her book, “My Puppy’s First Journal”, was published by Sasquatch Press in 2007.
When I started photographing dogs and cats, I was mostly concerned with making a portrait that had the same dignity as any formal portrait of a person. I wanted to show the animals as being worthy of the same respect. But as I went along I could see that something more was revealing itself. The photographs show there is a life force behind the animal’s eyes, that there is a soul. I hope the portraits make people consider that this particular dog or cat is an individual and not interchangeable with any other.
